RUSSIA-UKRAINE WAR

Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a military strike against Ukraine on February 24. The armies entered Ukraine from multiple routes, sparking fears of a European conflict over Russia's demands for a stop to NATO's eastward expansion.

For months, Russian President Vladimir Putin denied that he was plotting an invasion. In a televised statement on Feb 24, Putin argued that military intervention was required to stop Ukrainian attacks on the two breakaway territories of Donetsk and Lugansk, which Moscow recognizes as sovereign republics. President Vladimir Putin said last Monday that unless the far-right government in Ukraine's power in the country is reduced, Russia could be attacked. He charged Western nations with arming Kyiv in its fight against Russia.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT:

Tensions have existed between Russia and Ukraine for many years. Tensions heightened in 2021 when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky pressed US Vice President Joe Biden to enable Ukraine to join NATO. Ukraine is a democratic country with a 44 million-strong population and a 1,000-year-old history. It is also the second-largest country in Europe by area, after Russia.

After the Soviet Union fell apart, it voted for independence from Moscow. Putin considers Ukraine to be a man-made entity that has been wrenched from Russia by foes. Ukraine has also been referred to as a Western puppet by him. Russia became incensed by Zelensky's request to join NATO and began stationing troops near the Ukrainian border. The US observed unexpected Russian army movements near the Ukrainian border on November 10, 2021 Russia has stockpiled roughly 92,000 troops in preparation for an attack in late January or early February, Ukraine announced on November 28.

Moscow, on the other hand, denied it and accused Kyiv of conducting its military buildup. President Biden warned in December that if Russia invaded Ukraine, he would face heavy consequences. Putin has insisted on assurances from the West and Ukraine that the country will not join NATO.

INVASION OF 2014:

This isn't the first time that relations between Russia and Ukraine have risen. In 2014, Russia invaded Ukraine and occupied the Crimean peninsula. President Putin's backed rebels captured significant swaths of eastern Ukraine and fought the army. When its pro-Russian president was overthrown, the attack began. Since then, the battle has taken the lives of over 14,000 people.

WHAT DOES RUSSIA WANT

It's more about Russia's dissatisfaction. In a list of security needs submitted to the US in December, Russia emphasized that it does not want Ukraine to join NATO. According to the requests, any NATO drills near Russia's border were to be suspended. The NATO presence in Eastern Europe should be reduced as well. In December, Putin declared that Russia wanted assurances "that would rule out any further NATO eastward advances and the deployment of military systems that endanger us close to Russian territory."

Russia's goal, according to Samir Puri, a senior fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, would be to "defeat the Ukrainian armed forces in the field, inflict a crushing military defeat that humiliates the Ukrainians, and by extension create concern that Ukraine's Western allies, the United States and the United Kingdom, are insufficient."

CURRENT POSITION:

Russia has begun evacuating people from its diplomatic buildings in Ukraine, according to Russia's state-run news agency Tass. Moscow has embassies and consulates in Kyiv and Kharkiv, as well as in Odesa and Lviv. The Ukrainian embassy in Kyiv has verified that evacuations have begun, according to a Tass source.

According to Reuters, the Ukraine Parliament approved a draught law in the first reading on Wednesday that allows Ukrainians to carry firearms and use them in self-defence. The law's authors noted in a note that "approval of this law is fully in the interests of the state and society," and that the measure was essential because of "real risks and hazards for Ukrainian citizens."

In southern Belarus, near the Ukraine border, satellite photos revealed a new deployment of more than 100 military vehicles and dozens of army tents. Maxar Technologies also revealed that a new field hospital has been erected to a military post in western Russia near the Ukrainian border.

Earlier in the day, Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized that his country was always open to diplomacy. Despite the "difficult international scenario," Putin stated that his country prioritizes its national security interests and will continue to expand its military. . "Our country is always open to a candid and open debate, and we are anxious to find diplomatic solutions to the most challenging situations," he said. Putin declared, according to Reuters. "However, I'd want to emphasize that Russia's interests and the security of our people remain unwavering." As a result, in the future, our army and navy will be stronger and more modernized.
